When did you first start knitting / crocheting and where did you learn?
A learnt to knit when I was quite young, about aged 6-7. But I didn't learn to crochet until about 8 years ago. I basically taught myself by reading books and looking at vintage blankets.
Can you remember the first thing you made?
It was probably a scarf for my teddy. I still have him, but he scarf is long-gone. As a teenager i would often sew my own clothes and would buy a piece of material to make a skirt or some trousers to wear the same evening. I love the thought of having that much confidence!
Who are your favourite pattern designers and celebrity knitters & crocheters?
I love the British Knitting Designer Debbie Bliss. I admired her from afar for many years but I am now honoured to call her a treasured friend. I am also a great admirer of British Designers, Kim Hargreaves and Erika Knight. I love the up and coming talent of Emma Wright and pattern house Frank & Olive. There work is really cool and funky.
What are your favourite things to stitch and do you have a favorite item you've made?
I love making toys and clothes for children. They delight in the personal and don't take anything for granted. I have just finished my third solo book which will have some beautiful crocheted toys in it. I think it has some of my most favourite designs.
I also love making cowls for me. You can really change a whole outfit with a quick and easy accessory.
The most popular thing I ever designed was a Campervan doorstop. I have yet to re-publish this design but I get asked about this pattern constantly.
What music/podcasts/TV shows do you love to stitch along to?
I do love listening to classical music when I work and there is nothing better than sitting in my favourite chair in our living room with the sunshine on my back listening to music while I work. In term of podcasts you can't go wrong listening tot he BBC Radio 4 comedy stream - so many programmes which are the soundtrack to my lift. We don't get time to watch too much telly, but if we sit in the evening we will pick up recorded drama like The Good Wife, The Night Manager or something like Wolf Hall.
Do you do any other crafts and what are your hobbies?
I love to sew if I get time and particular I have a yearning to complete some more patchwork and quilting. I do enjoy cooking, especially for friends - that is my favourite way to socialise. Recently I have begun to practice some modern calligraphy which is alot of fun. But really my main additional hobby is gardening. Our garden brings me so much joy and it is a secret paradise to escape to. I love it so much.
