Felt is an easy and readily available fabric, and I usually use it too, but it's not very stiff. Perhaps consider stiff felt. It's not that easy to sew if you're doing it by hand, but it's much stiffer than normal felt and would work better for a wand. Other than felt or stiff felt, I'm not so sure, you could always use a bit of cardboard or wire in the middle to keep it straight and use fleece for a softer wand? It really depends on if you want a stiff wand, floppy wand, realistic wand, etc.

If you're comfortable using felt though, go for it! I'm sure they'll appreciate it either way.

Ive made a Lot of felt plushies. And from past "mistakes", i found that stuffing them with regular fabric scraps (like cut from t-shirts & such) makes them hard & stiff. More sturdy. Happy
...if u dont want to use fabric or make it plushie, theres a amazing harry potter wands tutorial on here, made from chopsticks & hot glue. They look really realistic.
