The dilemma...

I am planning on making something for everyone in my family this Christmas. The problem arises in that everyone will be getting one knit thing ..except for one aunt, uncle, and cousin. They are very materialistic and just won't appreciate or use something hand knitted. I don't get along particularily well with them either (haven't spoken to my cousin in 2 years). But, if they see that everyone else has something they don't there will be temper tantrums...
I'm just not sure what to do? Suck it up and knit them something little, or let them sulk?

It's the thought that counts, but if they are materialistic and won't appreciate it, then why bother? If there are tantrums that are inevitable, seemingly if they receive something or not, then that just shows THEIR immaturity. Don't let them spoil your holiday spirit, especially if you don't get along with them. The most you can do if you end up spending the holidays with them is be civil. Go ahead and knit them something, at least they won't be able to say that they weren't left out. If anything, if they decide to show their true colors, every one would see that there was some trying on your part to have thought of everyone to be put on your gift giving list. Just don't go out of your way of getting or "making" them something different just to satisfy their ego or whatever their problem may be. I know they are family, but they're lucky they were even thought about if they are the type of people you described.

Yah, thats sort of what I got to thinking about, making them something quick and little, that way no one raises a fuss. And also, that way I dont stress about something little and can be proud of what I made.

Thanks for the help!!!!! I can always count on the opinions here Happy Happy Happy Happy Happy

If they are materialistic & unnappreciative about what you get or make them then, like creativemind I think why bother? But to save a big uproar at Christmas then what Tara said is a good idea, something small and quick... if they don't like that, then at least you've tried!!

I know what you mean, a lot of my relatives are like that, which is why I normally bake them something - really easy for me, but to them it looks like I've made an effort so they can't say anything horrible

I've decided I'm going to knit scarflettes for every woman in the family Happy and toques for all the guys. Except my grandma, shes getting mittens cuz she loves knitted mittens, but cant make them anymore. I can get each of them done in a night or two, which is great Happy.
