Gears?

My sister dropped this music box she had and it broke, so she gave it to me to craft with. I'm trying to get out the tiny gears and use them to make some steampunk jewelry. The problem is that I can't seem to get any of the gears out. I managed to get a few pieces off with a screwdriver, but none of them were usable. The gears are attached with something that looks kind of like a screw, but I can't find a way to get them off. Any suggestions or tips?
