Meet the Author

Hey there, can you introduce yourself?

Medium mareikegruen

Hello, my Name is Mareike. I´m an illustrator, graphic designer and handmade-fan, living and working near Frankfurt am Main in Germany.

Tell us a bit about the book?

"Pretty papercrafts" contains a versatile collection of projects - all made from paper and cardboard. You will learn how to do decorative artworks and accessories for your home, paper-jewelry and really useful things like upcycled boxes and baskets. Qilling-Projects, papier-mâché and bookbinding are also presented and described step by step.

What was the inspiration behind it?

I love paper and already played and worked with it for my whole life. My father worked at a paper mill, and I seem to have inherited his love for this variously material. The problem was not to find ideas, but to decide which find their place in the book.

Which is your favourite project?

I like the flowerballs most. You can use patterned paper as well, so they look even more light and airy. And I really often wear the Mickey-and-Donald necklace.

What is your craft space like?

I work at home, spreading things all over the apartment before a book is finished. The instruction texts I write on the computer in the office, but I prefer to do creative-work right at the dining table.

Have you always been creative?

Yes, I always tried all the new materials and crafting-techniques with great pleasure since I have been a child. I am pleased today to be able to share my experiences in books with other creatives.

When did you first start crafting?

No, because I have already done handicraft as a child, I really cannot remember my very first works today any more. But I remember once having my kids-room completely decorated with paper garlands ... that was certainly one of my first major projects.

Who are your crafty heroes?

I really like Geninne Zlatkis illustrations & stamps and Elise Winters’ polymer-clay-jewelry. And Diana Beltrán Herreras paper-birds are fantastic.

Where do you find inspiration?

I simply keep open the eyes. I find inspirations in the everyday life. Nevertheless, I try to keep up with the newest trends by reading blogs on the Internet, visiting crafting-fairs and reading magazines.

What's next for you?

My latest book, about handcarving stamps, has just been publicized in Germany. Actually I work on two new book-projects - however, they are still confidential ;o)
And I startet to write a blog “zaubereike.de” this year, which will take some time in the future.
