Shredded Sweater

I am loving the shredded sweater trend and it looks super easy to diy it. What I am wondering is if it would work with a thin knit sweater?? All the tutorials that I have seen are for thicker sweaters but there is a thin one sitting in my closet that is begging to be made over. Also I am thinking of sewing on skull elbow patches as it is super sparkly and I want to tone down the girliness in it. What do you guys think? Would shredding work
