Harry Potter inspired golden snitches

I know this how to looks really long but it explains how to make both types of snitches in the picture. And I took lots of pictures so everything is really broken up. This is my first how to so I would love feedback on things like what I could change for next time to make it better :) I got this idea from a bunch of things all together. First I saw tons of snitches like this one http://www.etsy.com/listing/120873573/harry-potter-golden-snitch-bracelet-with?ref=exp_listing (My friend even sent me a picture of something like it) and my first thought was THAT WOULD BE SO EASY TO MAKE! But of course I didn't have any wing charms. Second was this project http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/golden-snitch-lockets (which is really really cool) but of course I don't have a golden spherical locket either.. So I sort of put the two ideas together. And then /of course/ I only had 2 beads that were even close to gold. And one of my friends wanted me to make him one, which is where the top and bottom ones came from. I also got the idea from this project http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/glue_pendants which I tried, but then while waiting for the glue to harden, I got bored and covered it on fine glitter. I've been wanting to make a snitch type thing for a while and only just got to it, and figured I should make a how to since I've been wanting to that too! (Killing two birds with one stone right??) I said the time was 20 minutes because I got distracted a lot while making these, I made a bunch of them, and I had to re-start a ton of times at the beginning to get it right so I don't actually know how long it took. Plus the first few take much more time, but once you make a couple you get the hang of it and its pretty easy and fast. I also already had all the things I needed to make them, so I have no clue how much it would cost to make them if you have to buy the supplies, but I'm sure it wouldn't be very much :) I apologize for the mess that is my work space... I was working on a bunch of projects all at once. Anyways I hope you like it! :D

Instructions

  1. Small img 2951 2

Okay so I'm going to show you how to make this one first :) For this you need: Around 10 inches of wire (I used silver) Hot glue Fine gold glitter Thick paper or card stock

  2. Small img 2919

Take you 10 inches of wire and cut it in half so you have 5 inches.

  3. Small img 2921

At about 2 inches ish (wow that was really accurate sounding..) make a small loop going outwards with your pliers

  4. Small img 2923

Using the big part of your pliers make a sort of wave shape

  5. Small img 2924

Then using the small part of your pliers make a loop, this time on the inside.

  6. Small img 2925

It should look something like this by now :)

  7. Small img 2926

Repeat steps 4 and 5 as many times as you want. Here I have 2 loops, but I have also made them with 3 and 4 loops.

  8. Small img 2928

Take the top part of the wire and fold is backwards over itself so the ends will stay together.

  9. Small img 2929

(Sorry this picture isn't very good) Then close the loop so that it's secure where ever you want the wires to meet. Cut off any extra.

  10. Small img 2930

Now it should look something like this!

  11. Small img 2931

Repeat steps 3-10 with the other piece of wire, going the other way. Try to make the two sides as close to being the same as possible (Hah. Unlike these ones.. Hypocrite much? XD )

  12. Small img 2940

Plus in your glue gun and lay down newspaper so you don't get hot glue on whatever surface you're working on. Get a piece of your thick paper/ card stock.

  13. Small img 2941

It doesn't matter what colour your paper is because you will be covering it glue and glitter anyways... I have no clue why I ended up using orange/red paper.. I guess its good cause it shows up well XD It doesn't really matter what size your paper is either, but using a full sheet is probably a bit much to work with and you have to make sure when you cut it that however big you want the middle of you snitch to be, will fit on it.

  14. Small img 2942

(Sorry about the random angle of this picture, I was trying to work fast so the glue didn't dry before I got the wings and glitter on) The next few steps you want to do quite quickly so the glue doesn't dry before you finish. Put a drop of hot glue on your paper. **Remember that hot glue spreads out, so don't add too much all at once or your circle will end up too big**

  15. Small img 2943

(Another picture with a weird angle, sorry!) Stick the wings in the sides of the glue. I also added some more glue right on top of where I put the wings to make them more secure.

  16. Small img 2944

    Cover in gold glitter! :D

  17. Small img 2945

Wait a bit (15-30 seconds) so the wings wont move when you pick it up, and shake off the extra glitter. It helps a lot if you have paper under everything otherwise the glitter ends up EVERYWHERE. Don't forget to make sure all the edges are covered in glitter after you shake it off.

  18. Small img 2946

Once its completely dry you have two options depending on if you are going cover the back side in glitter or not. If you aren't going to, then you should cut the execs paper off. If you are covering the back in glitter (and therefore it doesn't matter what the back looks like) you can just pull the paper off the whole back.

  19. Small img 2949

If you want you can flip it over and cover with either hot or white glue the first one I did I used white glue for the back side and it took too long to dry (cause I'm really impatient) so I decided to use hot glue for this side, but the side wasn't as smooth as with white glue, so if you have the patience not to touch it every 30 seconds I'd say go with white glue.

  20. Small img 2950

Cover in glitter and shake off excess. Let dry. (BE PATIENT)

  21. Small img 2958

And your done! :D You can add a chain if you want, but I'll take about that later.

  22. Small img 2938

Next I'm going to show you how to make the snitch with the bead I originally tried making 2 separate wings, putting a piece of wire through the bead and making loops on the end of that wire and attaching it to the wings, but it didn't look great, so this is what I came up with. For this one you just need around 10 inches of wire and a golden sphere shaped bead. This one is harder to make so I would recommend trying the other one first to get the hang of it.

  23. Small img 2933

Do steps 3-10 using the full piece of wire (all 10 inches) using the same measurements (Starting the first loop at around 2 inches from the end). Add the bead.

  24. Small img 2934

Okay now comes the difficult part. You have to make the other wing, but you have to do the steps backwards. Confused yet? Don't worry its not that hard. First start by making the bottom loop. The easiest way is to look at your other wing and just mimic it as best a possible.

  25. Small img 2935

Add the other wavy shapes and loops and then top outside loop.

  26. Small img 2936

Figure out where you want the end to be. It should be right beside the bead so the bead doesn't move too much.

  27. Small img 2937

Cut off the extra wire (If there is any) and then wrap the top wire under and behind the base wire like you did with the other side.

  28. Small img 2938

    And there you go!

  29. Small img 2939

You can add a chain to them if you want. I only added one to this one because it was the first on I made and I wasn't planning on making the others. What I did was I took a chain I already had (that wasn't important and I never used) and found the approximate halfway point. I opened one of the chain links from that place, detached it from the other side of the chain and re-attached it to the little loop at the top of one side of the snitch. Then I opened the chain link at the end of the other side of the chain (where I had just taken the first piece of chain from) and attached that to the other side.

  30. Small img 2951

These are all the ones I've made so far :) Hopefully I will get more gold beads soon. In this picture, the top left and middle left were the ones I used for the tutorial. The bottom right is what happens if you add too much glue, the snitch becomes a little fat looking XD And the small one in the top right corner I only used 4 inches for each side and started the first loop at 1.5 inches. The wings are curved up because its laying on its back (because its wings are curved). I'm going to make it into a bracelet because its small enough :) Hope you liked this how to and I'd love to see your version if you make one! :)
