- commented on her comment You will have to be careful using wool for a hamster, if hamster chews the material it will get stuck in the digestive tract and cause serious illness or death. sadly he responds to touch but cant be plucked out of the cage by hand he has to climb out using ladders because he cant see my hands grabbing him. I literally use about 3 drops of lemon juice on the base of the cage and always rinse and about 4 drops of lime go in the wood shavings the saw dust was a typo i used recycled wood shavings. I dont use essential oils but my friend used to wipe them on the outside of the base of her cage for odour. my hamster hasnt suffered any ill health from using 4 drops of lime on the saw dust i massage it in and dont use zest i always advise its a guideline not specific to your own pet you need to fit it to individual needs, i do always say the main part of this project is scented dissinfectant. Im only young and i dont know a great deal about this but i did seek advice from a trainee vet who works in a pet shop with hamsters everyday she said use the citrus sparingly and if he is bothered by it dont do it again. sorry for the long comment i just needed to clear up a few things i missed of the How to
