the problem with cutting and tying is you have a lot of lumps on the scarf. The nice thing about the pattern itself is you can do what I call simple stripes and not have to worry about it looking bad, because it all blends well. when it says to start the second color in the pattern, tie a knot connecting color a and color b, then knit with color b instead of a. If i recall you do that for two rows, leaving a chillin out on the side. then when you're ready to switch again, just knit with a instead of b. I made the stripes small enough that you can do this (it's called carrying it on the side) and not notice it in the scarf. Give it a try on a smaller scale to practice. cast on like 5 or 10 stiches and follow the pattern making a smaller version. if you have any questions about it, just drop me a comment or message and let me know.
