When did you first start sewing and how did you learn?
I don't remember ever learning, actually! All of the women in my family sew, so it was always around. I'm guessing my mother taught me? We had a sewing machine out in the basement that we could use at any time.
Can you remember the first thing you made?
I started out making (horrible) clothes for my Barbies. But,the first thing I made for myself was a full-length dress. Unfortunately, I made it in a tan color and it looked like a nun's habit. My family and I laughed so hard at that dress. :)
Do you have any favourite pattern designers or celebrity sewers?
I have so many favorite designers and celebrity sewers! I discover new favorites all the time. I'm a huge fan of Sanae Ishida, Celina Bailey and Hey June Handmade patterns among a dozen others. I like things that are a little fancy but wearable and so many sewists are nailing that look right now!
What's your sewing room like and how do you organize your stash?
My sewing space is in a corner of our big bedroom. I have most of my fabric, sewing machines and cutting table there. I love how convenient it is but sometimes I wish I didn't have to look at my sewing mess while I drift off to sleep!
What music/podcasts/TV shows do you love to stitch along to?
I love listening to audiobooks. I just finished listening to Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and I was crying all over my stitches by the end. I also love podcasts. Some of my favorites are Freakonomics, RadioLab, This American Life and Invisibilia. I do listen to some sewing podcasts as well such as The Crafty Planner and Who are We Kidding?
Do you do any other crafts and what are your hobbies?
In addition to sewing, I am an avid reader. I'm always reading three or four books at a time. I also love discovering new crafts related to manipulating fabric. I love screen printing, dying and hand-stamping. I just discovered rope-bowl making and I'm addicted. I love the joy of curiosity and exploring new things. I hope I never lose that excited passion for making things in a new way.
