  • How to make a yarn. Yarn From Plastic Bags - Step 1
    Step 1

First, collect all the plastic bags you want to use. I used lots of different colored bags, but if you want your yarn to be monochromatic, stick to one color bag. It's easiest to use bags of all the same material.

    Step 2

Next, straighten out the bag so that its basically a rectangle. It should look like this picture. Don't worry about it being perfect, it doesn't really matter in the end.

    Step 3

Now fold the bag vertically. I folded mine into fourths. Again, it doesn't really matter, it just makes it easier for you to cut it.

    Step 4

    Cut off the handles...

    Step 6

Next cut the bag horizontally into strips of about an inch. The thinner the bag, the fatter the strip should be.

    Step 7

When you unfold the strip, it should look like this.

    Step 8

Repeat steps 2-6 until you have a lot of strips.

    Step 9

Loop the strips together and tighten them

    Step 10

Once you loop a bunch of them together, you'll get a long string of plastic yarn. Use it the same way you would regular yarn. Example: playing with your cat =]

THANK you! Way back in the 70's I used to make shopping bags from strips of bags like this when I lived in Italy - we used to keep the balls in water while we crocheted as it made the plastic 'slip' more easily ! And it was hot so we didn't mind getting wet!!

I have forgotten how to cut the bags into a continuous strip but it was so much easier than having to join them all .... I think we sort of cut on he diagonal somehow .... ..... I wish I could remember. !!! If I do ... I will come back and post !

Yeah, I have a mess of plarn balls, but you're a little late with this how-to. One just like it has been posted already. But still a cool great idea.
