I had done this as a child and the craft has now reintroduced itself to me, of course, with my own spin.
So far all the designs were created directly on the wood making them one of a kind.

You can find these in a craft store usually with other wood crafts, they look like funny pens. An inexpensive one should run around $10 USD, but I got my newest for about $25, and it came with multiple tips for better handling (which I reccomend especially for more elaborate designs that aren't just linear).
