Wonder Woman Dress

Even super heroes need a nice formal dress.

This dress was made in 2014... it's just taken me this long to post the project! I decided to make a Wonder Woman formal dress because I wanted to do something different and challenge myself, I had never made a dress from a pattern, used interfacing, organza fabric or appliqued a design onto fabric before. I have always liked Wonder Woman's outfit and I really wish they would make an updated movie! So here is my take on the famous Hero!

Description

This dress was made in 2014... it's just taken me this long to post the project! I decided to make a Wonder Woman formal dress because I wanted to do something different and challenge myself, I had never made a dress from a pattern, used interfacing, organza fabric or appliqued a design onto fabric before. I have always liked Wonder Woman's outfit and I really wish they would make an updated movie! So here is my take on the famous Hero!

Instructions

The Pattern I used was 'McCalls M6838'

First I made a mock out of cheap fabric so i could see what i was doing, as I had never used a pattern before this helped immensely. I then chose my real fabrics.

You really just need to follow the pattern instructions, adding the gold belt yourself. I ironed the interfacing onto my red satin fabric first as i found this the easiest, then I cut the pattern out for the top (I used the sweetheart top). I cut out a gold belt with point and glued some some gold trim onto the edge.

Next the Top design! Seeing as this was a formal design I wanted her 'breast plate' to have more detail and be an Eagle in the shape of a W. Using Photoshop I molded my own design taking different parts from different images I found on the internet. I then used transfer paper to put the design on the gold fabric, which I had already ironed interfacing onto. I cut out each individual piece and hand sewed beads and sequins onto them. I found some really great feather sequins but when I went back to buy more they had sold out! They told me they were not getting anymore back in so instead I made my own out of a type of tin sheeting, I used a sharp pencil to make the lines on the feathers and then sprayed them with gold spray paint...Obviously if you are lucky and can find the sequin feathers it will save you a lot of time! I sewed all the pieces together and then sewed it onto the top.

I made my own stencil of a star out of a plastic stencil sheet (but you could also use acetate) and using a mini paint roller I painted the stars onto the organza. I found the roller brush worked the best because and actual stencil sponge brush pushed the paint under the stencil, where as the roller had less pressure so left a cleaner edge. After painting on each individual star I sewed the whole thing together and put a zip in the back.

Headpiece. I made this out of craft foam sheets. I found some polystyrene stars but they were too big, because they are very light and filled with air I cut them in half and squished them down (using my fingers) to make them half the size! I covered them in modpodge to seal them and painted them red. I made a pattern for the head piece and then cut it out of the foam. I painted it gold and when it was dry covered it in PVA and used gold leaf over it. I left it overnight then buffed the excess gold leaf away and glued the star in the center.

Arm Bands. Once again I used craft foam. I made my own pattern (overlapping the foam) and painted it silver (adding a polystyrene star in the middle). I used the same technique as the headpiece and PVAed over the whole thing and put silver leaf on top. The next day I buffed away any excess silver leaf and using a cotton ball/sponge, rubbed silver paint over the top (this just dulls down the leaf so it doesn't look so fake). I put Velcro on the back edge so i could do them up.

For the shoes I just had red high heals and added wings which i made out of, you guessed it CRAFT FOAM!! I stuck them on with Hot glue.

I made a lasso out of Gold rope and attached it onto the dress with a handmade clip. Seeing as this is Formal Wonder Woman play around with your hair to see what suits best, maybe have an up do or a side pony tail? And don't forget some pretty earrings, make-up and fake lashes!
