Description

Vintage twist: If you are using a blazer with a printed fabric, use a solid skirt - or get funky and match polka dots with stripes.

Instructions

  1. Lay the blazer flat on the work surface with the front facing up. Measure and mark the sleeves 2" (5cm) from the shoulder seam. Cut off the sleeves and save them for another project.

  2. Fold the edges of the vest sleeves 1/2" (13mm) to create a finished hem. Pin into place. Sew close to the raw edge.

  3. Lay the skirt flat on the work surface. Measure and mark a line around the skirt 2" (5cm) from the bottom edge. Cut off this strip of the skirt.

  4. Cut two 7" (18cm)-long pieces from the strip and set aside the remaining piece, which will be used later. Because these sections were from the bottom edge of the skirt, one long side should already be hemmed. Finish the two shorter sides of one piece by folding them in 1/4" (6mm) and pin into place. Machine stitch close to the raw edges, no more than 1/4" (6mm) from the edge. Repeat for the second strip.

  5. For each of the newly hemmed pieces, fold in the top raw edge 1/2" (13mm), so the fold is on the wrong side. Press. Place on the top hem of the vest pockets or as desired and pin to create pocket flaps. Sew the flaps to the pocket close to the folded edge, no more than 1/4" (6mm) from edge. Tip: Less is more. Don't feel like you have to use every bit of the skirt fabric. Save it for another project.

  6. Hand-sew the buttons onto each flap, one on each end of the pocket flaps.

  7. To make the trim for the lapel, first measure the length of the lapel. Use the remaining strip of skirt fabric, cut a section that is equal to that length. Cut that piece in half lengthwise. On one long side, fold over a 1/2" (13mm) seam allowance and press. Then, with the right sides together, match the other long side edge to the lapel. Pin into place. Sew close to the edge, no more than 1/8" (6mm) from the edge.

Fold the fabric over and then under the lapel and press. Slip stitch the folded edge to the underside of the lapel.
