Wine Bottle Cake

fondant covered sponge cake with butter cream icing

the day before i was going to make this i rolled out sheets of gum paste for the sides of the box and left them to set overnight. i worked out the length of the sides from the size of the cake tins i was going to use plus a little bit extra for the corners. i also rolled out a thin sheet of gum paste and rolled over it with the pizza cutter to create small strips to be used as the straw around the bottle. i baked 2 large square sponge cakes and cut them in half, i had to trim a little more of the width to keep the proportions correct. i stacked 3 of the sponge sections together with butter cream icing and cut a half bottle from the 4th sponge and put that on top, i then covered it all in fondant. once the gum paste sides had set i painted them with food colouring using long brush strokes the length of the sides to give a wood effect. while they were drying i painted the bottle and made a label for the it (i used the birth year for year and surname as the make of wine) once the sides were dry i attached them to the sides of the cake and then filled in around the bottle with the straw. Done!
