Whirligig is a light-hearted and whimsical scarf knit with alternating colours of Noro Taiyo yarn. Knit in the round as a long tube, “resting” yarns are carried up along the inside of the scarf so there are, miraculously, just a few ends to sew in at the end of all those stripes. The profusion of colour will soothe your eyes and brighten your mood on bleak winter days and the double-thickness fabric will keep you warm and toasty. finished measurements 7.5” (19 cm) in width 86” (218 cm) in length gauge 18 sts in 4” / 10cm Stockinette stitch Please note, this is not an original pattern – various versions of tubular scarves abound on Ravelry. This is simply a summary of what we did to achieve this particular effect.

Instructions

  1. Cast on 64 stitches with colour A and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker for beginning of round.

  2. Rounds 1-4: Knit Drop the strand of Colour A without breaking yarn and switch to Colour B.

  3. Rounds 5-8: Knit Continue knitting, alternating each colour every 4 rows until yarn is nearly finished – be sure to end with a full 4- row stripe sequence. Don’t cut the yarn after each stripe, simply carry the “resting” yarn up along the inside of tube as you switch ☺

  4. Cast off loosely, sew in ends, and block. Enjoy!
