    First, gather your supplies and choose several paint colors for the background of the canvas.

    Paint the canvas in a splotchy, colorful pattern. No actual pattern is necessary. You just want to see the color peeking through the herringbone pattern when finished. Let dry.

    Cut the painters tape for your herringbone pattern. The size may vary according to your canvas, but 1 inch x 3 inch pieces are recommended for this example, using a 12-inch square canvas. Lay the tape over the dry painting in a herringbone pattern with 1/2 inch spaces in between.

    Paint over the tape with white paint and let dry completely.
