fun little purse

About

Once I discovered printable fabric, there was no stopping me. You may notice that there are a few pictures where the purse looks a little different. When I was doing the directions, I put the strap on the wrong end of the purse, it was hanging upside down. So I had to start another one for the pictures. Live and learn!

You Will Need (14 things)

  • 1 Printable Fabric Sheets cotton
  • ¼ yd Of Fusible Fleece
  • 1 yd Of Cotton Ribbon With Measuring Tape Design Or Real Measuring Tape
  • 6 in Zipper
  • Key Ring
  • 2 Swivel Clips
  • Thread
  • Charm
  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron
  • Pin(s)
  • Ink Jet Printer
  • Vintage Pattern Or Image From Web(Make Sure There Is A Back And A Front)
  • 1 Fat Quarter fabric for lining

Steps (14 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

Scan front and back of pattern. At this point, if you want a slightly bigger purse, you can enlarge it using the computer. At first I thought I would edit the picture of the pattern since it has some tears and looked a little raggedy, but I decided that I liked the pattern warts and all.

  2. 2

Using one sheet of inkjet fabric (or 2 for bigger purse). Line up front and back scans side by side leaving no more then an inch between them and print.
Cut out around both pattern images leaving 1/2" seam allowance.

  3. 3

iron image to set the ink, when cool, peel paper from back of image.

  4. 4

Cut lining fabric and fusible batting to fit pattern pieces make sure you leave 1/2" seam allowance.

Using a dry iron and set on cotton setting, fuse batting to back of pattern images.

  5. 5

With front of zipper against front of purse and long edge of pattern image. Stitch into place using a zipper foot. Repeat with other side of zipper.

  6. 6

Zipper will be between the front and back of the purse when you lay them out flat.

  7. 7

Right sides together, pin lining to purse sandwiching the zipper in between. Flip over and using zipper seam as a guide, stitch lining to purse.
Repeat with the other side of lining. Fold back lining and purse pieces exposing zipper. Press. Top stitch 1/2" from zipper teeth on either side of zipper. Make sure purse unzips easily without getting caught in fabric.

  8. 8

Cut approx. a 4" or 5" piece of measure tape trim. Fold in half over key ring. Pin in place then sew a small square of stitching close to key ring.
Pin tab to purse with right sides together, key ring on outside, raw edges even with raw edge of purse. Tab should be on top of pattern where the zipper starts. Baste into place.

  9. 9

Make sure zipper is unzipped!! Lay purse pieces together right sides together, do the same with the lining pieces.
Stitch purse around the outside using 1/2"seam allowance & leaving a 4" opening at bottom of lining to turn purse. Make sure you catch key ring.
    clip corners and trim seams.

  10. 10

Turn purse right side out. Machine or hand stitch bottom of lining closed. Stuff lining into purse, zip up zipper. If there are some small openings at each end of zipper, you can hand stitch those closed.

  11. 11

To make wrist strap, cut a piece of measuring tape ribbon 18" to 20" depending on how long you want your strap. Fold it in half, raw ends together. Slip raw edges of ribbon thru oval part of clip, fold over and then once more folding under raw edges. Stitch in a square as close to clip as possible using a zipper foot.
Clip strap to round key chain on purse.

  12. 12

Make a measure tape bow: Fold measure tape back and forth over itself about 3 inches wide. Tack this together with a few hand stitches. Using a vintage button, lay bow on upper corner(zipper side) of the purse front. Lay button in center and hand sew button and bow onto purse.

  13. 13

Make a zipper pull with a charm and a small metal hook. Attach charm to hook with jump ring then hook onto zipper.

  14. 14

Now enjoy your little one of a kind purse!!
