Instructions

Get your seitan filling underway by slowly heating some olive oil in a large pan, and adding the chopped onion. Cook until the onion begins to go translucent, then add the garlic, thyme, barbeque sauce and salt and pepper, and let all the flavours sizzle together for a good three minutes.

  2. Making sure nothing burns, add in the seitan or beef-style pieces, and a little water if needed, and leave to simmer for about ten minutes, stirring occasionally. The idea is to get the bulk of the cooking done here, and use the grill for the last few minutes of heat, and, of course, some great grill lines.

  3. Once the seitan is cooked through and has started to go a little sticky, turn on the Healthy Grill and wait for it to heat up. Chose a few bigger pieces of seitan to place on the grill, holding back the onions and saucier bits- you just want some of that sauce to char a little so it gives it makes for a more intense barbeque flavour.

  4. When the seitan is sizzling, place back in the pan and add slices of tomato to the grill- these will soak up any of the sauce left on the griddle making it even tastier in your sandwich. Once the tomatoes are beginning to get grill lines, replace with the sub rolls (everything looks better with a grill line!)

Fill your roll with layers of tomato, seitan, American mustard and gooey vegan cheese, and finish off with some crispy onion sprinkles. Decadence at its (Stateside) finest.
