Description

Gulab Jamun is an extremely indulgent dessert made from milk powder of mawa(highly condensed milk) and fried in ghee (refined butter. But thanks to Richa ( http://www.veganricha.com/2011/10/gulab-jamuns-veganized-indian-sweet.html ) we now have a veganized version which is low in calories too!

Instructions

  1. Small img 0529

In a wide bowl, take the flour, ground almonds, ground oats, baking powder and cardamom powder. mix all the dry ingredients well ( I snapped the picture before mixing)

  2. Small img 0531

Add a tbsp of oil and mix in lightly

  3. Small img 0532

Now make a soft dough with water. Add 1 tbsp of water at a time. You may need 10-12 tbsp of water to get really soft dough. Do not knead much. Let it rest, covered, for 5 min.

  4. Small img 0534

In a pot take 1.5 cups of water and 3/4 cup of refined sugar.

  5. Small img 0538

Bring it to a boil and then keep it on medium heat for 15 min or till the syrup thickens. Add 1 tbsp of cardamom powder and 1 tbsn of rose water.

  6. Small img 0535

Roll the dough into smooth balls

  7. Small img 0543

Deep fry in batches for 7 min till they turn dark gold or light brown in colour.

  8. Small img 0541

when they are still hot, toss them into the syrup. keep the syrup on low heat for 5 min after adding the balls.

  9. Small img 0544

All the balls are in. This is how they look after 5 min into the syrup. They will be hard now but give them time and they'll soften up.

  10. Small img 0545

30 min into the syrup. All soft and drenched in syrup.. mmmm :)

Now take out that pretty little plate you've been waiting for so long to show off arrange the jamuns, click pictures and upload a version :D :P No seriously, refrigerate for 2 hrs and serve chilled or serve hot (these are delicious both ways) Garnish with chopped pistachios.

Store them in the syrup and serve with a little syrup.
