You Will Need (6 things)

  • Old Credit Card
  • Clear Packing Tape
  • Magazines
  • Embroidery Thread
  • Lightweight Cardboard
  • Double Sided Tape

Steps (13 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

Cut magazine pages into 2 by 4-1/2 inch strips. You will need 10 strips for each row and 5 rows for each coaster, so a total of 50 strips for each coaster. Cover each one on one side with clear packing tape. This will make your coaster waterproof.

  2. 2

Fold one of the strips in half lengthwise.

  3. 3

Open back up and fold each side into the center line.

  4. 4

Fold bottom up to create a thin strip.

  5. 5

    Fold in half widthwise.

  6. 6

Feed one wrapper into a second wrapper, folded in the same manner. It is easiest if you feed them with the most folds up on the one you are feeding into the other one, and the one that is being fed into should have no extra folds. Repeat this until you have 10 wrappers linked together.

  7. 7

Fashion a needle out of an old credit card as shown. Punch a hole in one end for your thread. I use embroidery thread.

  8. 8

When laying out your rows make sure that you are getting a zig zag pattern to where your needle will come in and out. In other words, it shouldn't be two pieces straight in a row. You should have to jog over a bit.

Go ahead and create a knot on one side of the row. This will be adhered down and will not show later.

  9. 9

Insert the needle into the top loop of the second row.

  10. 10

Pull snug. Insert needle into the next loop in the second row and so on until the whole row has been connected, pulling snug between each stitch.

  11. 11

For the base, cut your lightweight cardboard to 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches. Find a really good graphic on your magazines. Cut a piece 6 by 6 inches and adhere to the cardboard. Cut angled corners and glue down edges.

  12. 12

Find another good image for the center of the coaster and adhere that down. I cover this with packing tape as well to make it waterproof. Now take your woven magazine strips that are all sewn together into a coaster and use double sided adhesive tape to attach to this base.

  13. 13

Make four of these and you have a set of recycled coasters.
