If you are looking to create a unique gift with minimal supplies, this is perfect! It only took me about two hours to make this dream catcher, and the results are simply fab! Try to use supplies you already have around the house.
This dream catcher project is so simple, the photos really explain themselves! I chose to use two t shirts for my dream catcher; the shirts I chose had beads and other decorative elements that worked great for making my project. The striped top had a plastic ring in it's design, so I used that for the top of the dream catcher.
Here are other materials I gathered. You will notice that there is ribbon in this photo. I didn't end up using it in the project, but you could if you wanted to. This is your chance to improvise and get totally creative with your choice of materials.
(If you are using an embroidery hoop, then skip this step.) If you have chosen to use a plastic lid, you will need to cut out a design in the middle to provide space to wrap the fabric. I chose to make a star but you could create a hexagon, circle, etc. To cut out the design use a knife or exacto knife and very carefully score both sides of the plastic in the shape of the design. When you score both sides, the plastic center is very easy to remove with a little push.
Here comes the fun part! Create some strips about three inches wide from the t shirt. Then tie one of the strips onto the ring and start wrapping the fabric around the ring. When you get to the end of the strip, simply tie the end together with another strip and tuck the ends under. You can mix up the fabrics, or create a multi colored design.
I used the plastic ring from one of the shirts and followed the same process to decorate it. Use the needle and thread to secure any edges, you could also wrap the thread around different sections to make the dream catcher more sturdy. Tie on some long thin strips of fabric along the bottom, add some beads or embellish with buttons. And there you have a gorgeous dream catcher, the perfect gift for an ecologically conscious friend or relative!
