I started this cushion back in September 2010 (before they were trendy and for sale in all the shops) and finished it in May 2012.... just in time for the Queen's Jubilee.

You Will Need (7 things)

  • Aida Cloth
  • Sewing Machine
  • Stuffing
  • Red, white and blue tapestry Yarn
  • Fabric for the back of the cushion
  • Tapestry Frame
  • Yarn Needle

Steps (16 steps, 2400 minutes)

  1. 1

Cut a piece of aida cloth to the size you'd like your finished cushion to be with an extra centimetre around the edges.

  2. 2

Measure out the Union Jack on the fabric with a pencil and ruler. Make sure you get the widths of the diagonal lines correct... these are tricky.

  3. 3

Attach the aida cloth to a tapestry frame and thread your needle with red yarn.

  4. 4

Start by stitching the first row of the middle cross.

  5. 5

Keep stitching rows until you reach the middle of the cross, then tie off your yarn and continue at the other side of.

  6. 6

Stitch the middle of the cross in row by row.

  7. 7

Now stitch the white edging around the cross.

  8. 8

Stitch the red and white diagonal lines... making sure to get the pattern correct.

  9. 9

Now stitch in all the blue and see the Union Jack take shape. It's a tedious process but it'll look great when it's finished!

  10. 10

Lay your finished tapestry face down on to your fabric for the back, with the right side facing up.

  11. 11

Pin around the edges and trim the backing fabric to size, leaving a small margin around the edges.

  12. 12

Sew around the cushion, either by hand or with a sewing machine leaving a small section unstitched.

  13. 13

Turn the cushion right side out.

  14. 14

Stuff the cushion until it's nice and full.

  15. 15

Stitch up the open edge and you're all done.

  16. 16

Well done... that was a lot of work!
