Instructions

  1. Small pillow1 1267461392

Start by measuring your pillows. My ones were the basic ones from Ikea that measured 60cm x 38cm.

  2. Small pillow2 1267461463

Make a paper template to the dimensions of the pillow.

  3. Small pillow3 1267461668

Draw around your template on to your fabric.

  4. Small pillow5 1267461867

Cut out two rectangles of your covering fabric (I used a quilted star patterned fabric) and two rectangles of lining fabric (I used a silky dark blue). Cut out two more half rectangles (30cm x 38cm) of the lining fabric.

  5. Small pillow6 1267461976

Now make a paper template for your cross. This should be 60cm wide and 38cm tall to match your pillows and about 7cm thick.

  6. Small pillow7 1267462331

Trace around the cross on to your fabric (I used a silky pink).

  7. Small pillow8 1267462376

Cut two crosses out. Put these to the side for the moment. I also ironed on some interfacing to the back of my crosses to make the colour thicker.

  8. Small pillow9 1267462569

Lay down your cover fabric and place the paper cross template on top. Lay down two strips of different width ribbon from the corners in to the centre of the cross and cut to size. Remember to refer to the photo of the union jack to get the ribbons the right way around. Pin in place.

  9. Small pillow10 1267462804

Place a strip of contrasting fabric on top. Pin in place.

  10. Small pillow11 1267463019

Remove the paper template and place the silk cross in it's place. Pin in place.

  11. Small pillow12 1267463028

Cut more ribbon to place around the edges of the cross and pin in place.

  12. Small pillow13 1267463085

Sew around the edges of the ribbons.

  13. Small pillow14 1267463238

Change the thread colour to match the ribbon.

  14. Small pillow15 1267463322

Stitch up both of your union jacks and put to the side.

  15. Small pillow16 1267463328

Take your half rectangle of lining fabric and fold over one of the wider rough edges.

  16. Small pillow17 1267463395

    Stitch in place neatly.

  17. Small pillow18 1267463463

Place on top of your cover and pin the top edges together. You want the stitched side to be facing out.

  18. Small pillow19 1267463517

Sew on to the cover along the pinned edge.

  19. Small pillow20 1267463680

Now fold over one of the short edges on the larger lining rectangle and sew along the edge.

  20. Small pillow21 1267463715

Pin on top of the cover, you want the stitched edge to be at the top, where the shorter rectangle is also stitched.

  21. Small pillow22 1267463860

Sew along all the sides apart from the top, already stitched edge.

  22. Small pillow23 1267463983

Fold inside out and that's your pillowcases finished.

  23. Small pillow24 1267464039

Pop in your pillows and put on your bed. Sweet dreams!
