About

Ok guys, I prepared this tutorial because I recently made this shirts and I didn't see any good tutorials for it in here so I made this for anyone who would like to have some fun dying shirts! It's a great activity to do with kids or by yourself. I suggest that begginers buy a tie dye kit in wal-mart or some place like that because it brings you every thing you need except the shirt and the fork and it only costs around $12! This isn't a complicated process but it's a long one and I will try to do my best so you can understand it and have a great shirt! If you have any questions just ask...Enjoy! :)

You Will Need (9 things)

  • Gloves
  • Aluminium Foil
  • 1 100% Cotton T Shirt (Preferably White)
  • 3 Dye (For This Tutorial Fuchsia, Green And Blue)
  • 1 Fork
  • 3 Applicator Bottle s (For The Dye)
  • Tie Dye Kit
  • Plastic Wrap Or Plastic Bags
  • 3 Rubber Bands

Steps (16 steps, 50 minutes)

  1. 1

First of all, if your 100% cotton shirt is new wash it before starting everything because new shirts tend to shrink. If not continue with the next step...

  2. 2

You want to cover your working area (table, kitchen counter) with aluminum foil so you don't get any messes around. To stick the foil to the kitchen counter (I don't know if it works for tables) spray water into the counter, place foil on top and press it down.

  3. 3

Gather all your materials! For this tutorial we are going to use fuchsia, green and blue dye but you can use whatever colors you like because it's your shirt, your fashion statement and it's always going to come out different and unique just like you! ;)

  4. 4

Now get your dye packets, applicator bottles and water cuz we are gonna prepare our dye! Follow your kits instructions to prepare the dye or just empty your dye packet into applicator bottle and fill it with water up to the bottles line. If your bottle doesn't have a line fill it to the top but not completely. Then shake your bottle until the powder on the bottom seems like it haves dissolved completely.

*The dye on the picture has already been used but I wanted you to have an idea of how your bottles will look :)

  5. 5

Ok now that we have our dyes ready we need to prepare our shirt. As I said before you have to wash your shirt first if it's new. Now for this tutorial our shirt haves to be wet, not completely though more like damp. Take it out of the washer and don't dry it use it like that or simply take your hair water sprayer thingy and damp your shirt or soak it in water and make sure to wring it out really good. Now lay your shirt flat on your working station (table, counter).

  6. 6

Now the fun starts! Take your fork and place it wherever you want your spiral to form (it can be in the side, top or bottom but I'm going to do it in the middle) and start twisting it clockwise or counterclockwise whatever you feel like doing!

  7. 7

It will start bunching up like in the picture. Just keep turning until you get a circle like in the next step.

  8. 8

Carefully remove your fork and you will end this cute tornado swirl thingy! :)

  9. 9

Now take your rubber bands and carefully place one in the middle of your shirt.

  10. 10

Turn your shirt and take another rubber band and cross it in the middle. Use a third one and just try to make pizza slices like in school. You will end up with six pieces.

*Tuck in any corners that you need to, mine looks horrible lol

  11. 11

This is how it looks in the middle.

  12. 12

Now let's dye! Place your shirt over your aluminum foil covered area and take your dyes and start covering each section of the shirt with whatever color you like. I did mine like the picture.

  13. 13

Woohoo! Dying shirts is cool! :D

*For the record the shirt on the picture is not my shirt because I didn't took a pic of it while dying it, but that is how it looks like.

  14. 14

Once you finish dying the top of your shirt turn it over and do the same colors, that you did on the top, on the back (in the exact places).

  15. 15

Now that you have finished dying your shirt you are going to wrap it with paper wrap or plastic bags like the ones that you get in the supermarket and you are going to let it rest for 24 hours. I know it's hard to wait that much to see your creation but believe me it will be worth it!

  16. 16

*24 hours later* Unwrap your shirt and prepare to get messy but don't take off the rubber bands yet! Go to your shower and put your shirt under running water and start removing that dye. After a few minutes take off the rubber bands, admire your creation, be excited and keep removing the dye. When you start seeing that your water is starting to come out clear you are ready to wash your shirt in your washer machine BY ITSELF with just a little bit of soap (I'm not responsible for any stained clothes or washers). Then dry it and voila!! Master piece! :')
