Description

Jenny has pretty much the same taste as me, which means she loves satchels and Harris Tweed, so I decided to make her a tweed pocket bag with her name on it.

Instructions

  1. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 151727 img 5025

Start off with a basic satchel.

  2. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 151742 img 5028

Cut out the template and pin it to your fabric

  3. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 153333 img 5026

Pick out some tweed or fabric you'd like to decorate it with.

  4. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 153401 img 5027

Trace the shape of the pocket on to a piece of paper to make a template.

  5. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 153552 img 5033

Cut out the fabric leaving a 1/2" margin around the outside.

  6. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 153600 img 5034

Use a needle and thread to baste the edges over around the template.

  7. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 154015 img 5038

    Remove the paper template.

  8. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 154032 img 5039

Sew around the outline with your sewing machine.

  9. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 154047 img 5040

    Unpick the basting stitches.

  10. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 154056 img 5041

Stitch your label in place if you have one.

  11. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161432 img 5042

It's now time to attach the pocket to your bag.

  12. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161514 img 5043

Use fabric or leather glue to glue around the outline of your pocket

  13. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161612 img 5044

Place the tweed on top and clip around the edges with small pegs until the glue has dried.

  14. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161709 img 5045

Cut small x slits above where the buckles are and squeeze the buckles through.

  15. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161752 img 5046

Carefully cut away the shape of the buckles from the tweed.

  16. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161827 img 5047

Glue the tweed down around the buckles.

  17. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161854 img 5048

If you want to add your name to the bag, lay the flap flat on your desk.

  18. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161932 img 5053

Use an alphabet stencil to paint your initials in stamping ink on the bag.

  19. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161924 img 5051

    Dust with embossing powder.

  20. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161943 img 5054

Shake off any excess dust before heating each letter with a heat gun.

  21. Small 112651 2f2015 12 30 161950 img 5083

    You're all done!
