This is an item I made for a craft fair, that is now owned by my aunt. It earned a Daily Deviation award on Deviantart in Nov of 2013. This is more of an explanation than an actual pattern. You're just making a generic scarf in double crochet with two strands of yarn, and a large hook, but varying your width and length according to personal preference. The pattern is very simple, and all depends on your personal preference. Pick two colors of yarn to use as a doubled strand (I used Red Heart Super Saver in black and a forest green), 3 complimenting colored (large) buttons, and a P crochet hook.
Using a large crochet hook, double crochet the desired length of your cowl. Chain 2 and turn at the end of each row being careful to make sure you do not miss the last stitch in each row. Continue this way until you find your desired width. - I chose to make mine wide enough that I could roll/fold it over, or pull it up over my face. The darker your colors are, the harder it will be to see your stitches, so you may want to use a stitch marker.
Weave in your ends and then add your 3 buttons along the length-wise edge of your scarf so that buttoning it to the width-wise edge makes it attach at an angle. The buttons should be large enough so that they do not slide through the Double Crochet stitches. For added style, I have the top most button added for aesthetics more than function, and fold over the top, adding the folded piece into the second button. One thing I would have changed, that I highly suggest, is the addition of a button on the inside to secure the "flap" piece on the inside of the scarf. It has a tendency to migrate out of the sharp angle if not tucked in well. I hope to see your creations!
