Using three random pieces to form a functional chalkboard!

One of my favorite things to do is to refurbish "junk" into something else. Sometimes, the junk has to sit awhile before I figure out what to do with it, but eventually I come up with something. I love the challenge of figuring out another use for something I've purchased. While it is made of three random pieces, I combined them to form a beautiful and functional chalkboard message center. This is the type of piece you can hang in your mudroom to write messages and reminders for your family, hold the incoming and outgoing mail, store your keys, and......whatever else you can think of!

To make this chalkboard message center, I decided I'd pair a compartment from the back of a door from a sewing machine table with a large, thin board from my scrap wood and an old wood frame.

  2. I began by painting the frame and compartment in a creamy white chalk paint and the board in a gray chalk paint. I really like the contrast of these two paint colors.

When the gray was dry, I painted a rectangle filled with three coats of chalkboard paint. It was so much easier to do it before the frame was attached. Everything got a coat of paste wax (aside from the space painted with chalkboard paint).

  4. Then the frame and compartment were attached to the board using screws from behind the board. Two D-hooks were attached to the back to hang the chalkboard on the wall.

I am thrilled with how this turned out. I had rolled the idea around in my head for quite awhile before finally putting the project together. Don't you love it when I something works out the way that you hoped it would?!!? I love how distressed and worn everything is, including the board I built it on....There is a lot of chipping and marks in the wood, but that is perfect for pairing with the two old pieces. Everything looks like it goes together. Perfection!
