Top Table Lampshades

Celebrate with a Stitch

These wine glass lampshades are the sweetest way to decorate a celebration table. They are designed to button around a bowl-shape glass – a large white wine glass is the best – that has a battery night light placed inside it. They are a great way to make the bridal party’s table look extra special. I have embroidered my design onto linen fabric, although as an alternative these could simply be made from vintage embroidered linens. Finished size: 33cm x 10cm (13in x 4in)

Instructions

  1. Using a template, trace off the outline onto a folded piece of paper as marked and cut out. Open up the paper pattern and glue it onto thin card to give you your full lampshade template.

  2. Mark around the template onto thick iron-on interfacing; cut out and set aside. Place the template in the middle of the linen fabric and draw around it using a pencil.

Transfer the embroidery design onto the front of the fabric, and then iron the lightweight interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric, centring it over the embroidered design.

  4. Stitch the embroidery design using two strands of thread through- out. Embroider the heart, the birds and the swirls with chain stitch, and use a large French knot for the birds’ eyes and satin stitch for their noses. Whip the chain stitch around the heart and sew a row of backstitch around the edge to outline it. Embroider the couple’s initials in the centre of heart.

Once you have finished the embroidery, press the fabric well. Iron or spray glue the thick interfacing onto the wrong side of your work, making sure the embroidery design is centralized in it. Trim the linen fabric to the size of the interfacing.

  6. Bind around the outside edge of the lampshade using ready-made binding tape starting at one of the top corners and mitring the other corners. Ready-made binding, which is made from a finer material, is ideal to create a delicate finish on the wine glass lampshades

Mark on the button positions along one side of the lampshade and make the bar tacks on the opposite side. Finally, sew the five pearl buttons in place. When using vintage embroidery to make your shade, choose the best part of the embroidery to show in the centre of the shade. Cutwork motifs work especially well for the table top lampshades.
