Get ready for spring with this easy, breezy layering piece.

Turn any long sleeve blouse into a feminine, chic layering piece that's perfect for spring. This project is easy to create with either silky or cotton blouses. I've included two variations at the end.

Instructions

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 1
    Step 1

If your blouse is silky, this is the easiest way to neatly remove the sleeves. (If it's cotton, cut off the sleeve, roll the edge under twice, and stitch in place.)

Pull the sleeve through to the inside and pin.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 2
    Step 2

Stitch around the armhole, about an 1/8" from the edge.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 3
    Step 3

Cut sleeve off from the inside. Leave yourself enough fabric to edge stitch or fray check.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 4
    Step 4

    Repeat with the other sleeve.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 5
    Step 5

From the removed sleeves, cut out strips to make into the neck tie. Make the strips twice as wide as the finished tie (+ 1/2" for seam allowance). I wanted my tie to fit neatly under the collar, so my strips were 2.5" wide to make a 1" finished tie. Each tie will be made from two strips, one long and one short.

    Step 6

With right sides together, sew one short and one long strip together. Repeat with the other pair.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 7
    Step 7

With right sides together again, fold the strip in half lengthwise, press, and pin.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 8
    Step 8

Stitch down the raw edge. Cut one end at an angle and stitch closed.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 9
    Step 9

Turn the ties right side out and press. Turn under the ends with raw edges 1/2" and press.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 10
    Step 10

Flip up the collar. Line up a pressed-under end with the shoulder seam and stitch down. Repeat on the other side.

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 11
    Step 11

Flip down the collar and you're done!

  • How to make a collared top. Tie Neck Blouse - Step 12
    Step 12

Variation 1 - Fold under the collar and edge stitch around the neck. Attach ties to shoulder seams as usual.

    Step 13

Variation 2 - Shorten a dress and make the neck ties from the extra.
