I was wafting through a thrift store when I came across this leopard print fabric. The fabric spoke to me and said Rrrarrr, that is when I knew I was going to turn it into a pleated high waist skirt with an elastic band. You, of course, can use whatever fabric inspires you for this skirt.

Description

I was wafting through a thrift store when I came across this leopard print fabric. The fabric spoke to me and said Rrrarrr, that is when I knew I was going to turn it into a pleated high waist skirt with an elastic band. You, of course, can use whatever fabric inspires you for this skirt.

Instructions

  1. Small img 3908 1280362584

Decide where you want the waist band to rest. Think about your body type, and what works for you. Wrap the elastic band around, measure and cut.

  2. Small img 3910 1280362676

Now that you have a width you are working with. Think about how long you want it to be, measuring from the bottom of the waistband down. The width of the fabric is going to x3 your waist band. The length is whatever you decided, plus 2 inches for good measure. Measure and cut your fabric pieces to match your measurements. I had to cut two pieces of fabric to match my measurements, an extra step would be to sew the two pieces together to make one long piece.

This is probably going to be the most time consuming step, but YOU CAN DO IT. Decide where you would like your pleats, fold, and pin. The pleat folds should have enough overlap to match the length of the waist band. Note: If you have pleated and it is a bit longer than the band, no worries, you can trim later.

Now, sew the pleats in place and give yourself a pat on the back. You just finished the longest part of the Rrrarrr Skirt.

Now, this is probably the most difficult step. Sewing the elastic waistband. Put the fabric on top of the waistband, sew the two together. I pulled a bit on the elastic waistband gently as I sewed the two together, you will just have to feel for the tension. I double stitched it for good measure.

Sew the hem to your desired length. While the skirt is inside out, sew the two edges together to close the skirt.

Voila, you have your Rrrarrr skirt.
