"The Republic" Scarf

The scarf to match "The Republic" Hat.

This scarf was designed to match a hat I designed called “The Republic”. The pattern was inspired by an expensive hat featured on the Banana Republic website. The scarf features the same wide “buttoned” garter stitch band as the hat. It is perfect for knitting while watching television (or when you’re busy talking to other knitters during “knit-night”) since it only uses garter and stockinette stitch.

Description

This scarf was designed to match a hat I designed called “The Republic”. The pattern was inspired by an expensive hat featured on the Banana Republic website. The scarf features the same wide “buttoned” garter stitch band as the hat. It is perfect for knitting while watching television (or when you’re busy talking to other knitters during “knit-night”) since it only uses garter and stockinette stitch.

Instructions

  1. Pattern Notes: You will make two sides of the scarf separately and join them in the center using the three needle bind off. You may find instructions for this method in many knitting reference books as well as online.

  2. First Half of Scarf: Cast on 32 stitches with one ball of yarn, drop yarn. Cast on 20 stitches with 2nd ball of yarn. (RS) Knit entire row of both sections, keeping them separate. (WS) Knit entire row of both sections, keeping them separate. Continue this way in garter stitch until piece measures 2” from cast on edge, ending with a WS row. (RS) K7, pm, K to end of first section, drop yarn. Bind off 13 stitches from 2nd section using the 2nd ball of yarn, K12, pm, K7. (WS) K7, P to end of section. Connect with next section by purling 1st stitch of next section with same yarn. P13, K7. Cut yarn from unused ball of yarn. (RS) K7, K25, K7 (WS) K7, P25, K7 Repeat the last two rows until piece measures 30 inches, ending with a RS row. Slip stitches onto a stitch holder.

  3. Second Half of Scarf: Repeat instructions as for first half of scarf, except do not transfer to stitch holder.

  4. Assembly: With right sides together, connect the two sides using the three needle bind off. Block to final dimensions. Secure the garter stitch flaps (created from the 13 stitch bind off) with the buttons by sewing one on each side. Be sure to sew through both sections to anchor the button.
