Description

Got an ugly denim maxi or midi-skirt lurking at the back of your closet? Transform it into a funky overall dress with my quick step-by-step tutorial!

Instructions

  1. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072215 dscf1058

Grab a dowdy denim midi or maxi skirt + a couple of large vintage buttons hmmm, but this skirt has a front zip…how will you be able to put it on when the overall bib & straps are attached? Simply turn the skirt around and have the zip in the back! Easy peasy! *be sure to try it on back to front to make sure it fits comfortably before refashioning

  2. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072245 dscf1059

...I removed those hideous side pockets

  3. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072312 dscf1060

chop the skirt to your desired length

  4. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072347 dscf1061

slice out a square of the chopped length for the overall bib

  5. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072407 dscf1062

arrange the overall bib on the waist of the skirt right side facing out & pin * I added one of the original side pockets to my bib & detached the top portion of the belt loops for easy stitching, sewed it together then reattached the belt loops

  6. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072508 dscf1065

on to the straps: Try on the almost-overall-dress & decide the length needed for the straps & cut a couple of strips from the remaining chopped length (mine measured 70cm x 10cm)

  7. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072532 dscf1066

and now it’s time to bust out that hausfrau torture device: 1. fold each end of the strap up & press 2. fold in one side of the strap & press 3. fold in the other side of the strap & press 4. overlap the folded edges of the straps & press

  8. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072605 dscf1070

    stitch together

  9. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072617 dscf1071

and repeat the whole process to create the other strap

  10. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072630 dscf1072

arrange the straps on the back of the skirt (which was originally the front) & stitch ‘em on

  11. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072650 dscf1073

add the button holes to the top of the overall bib

  12. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072703 dscf1074

stitch the buttons to the straps

  13. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072717 dscf1093

Fray the raw edges of the overall bib if desired and go rock your new overall dress!

  14. Small 105416 2f2014 11 07 072758 1

    the front-as-back looks fab!
