The 100 Mile Scarf : )

KNITTING WITH HAND DYED LOCALLY RESOURCED YARN

I found a bag of undyed sheep's wool yarn in the local thrift store - as it turned out, the yarn was made on a nearby farm! Exciting. Affordable, local, natural - a great find. I dyed some of the skeins with plant materials from my backyard - goldenrod to make yellow, and oak leaves to make the dark grey. As I am a pretty beginner knitter, I challenged myself to try using simple colourwork - this time, I used the slip stitch technique to introduce the grey pattern as a transition between the yellow and the white stripes. Other than that, the scarf is stockinette stitch, 10 rows of each base colour, 22 stitches wide. Washed and bound, the scarf is dense and scratchy :-), strictly outerwear. It will be perfect for windy spring days, worn over my jean jacket. I like how the colours came together and I love to know where the yarn and the dye came from - frugal and sustainable fun!
