This easy-peasy knit dress is comfortable enough to be loungewear, but it's also cute enough to parade about in outdoors with its asymmetrical hem that ups the style factor. The best part is that the loose design keeps you cool in the summer heat.
This easy-peasy knit dress is comfortable enough to be loungewear, but it's also cute enough to parade about in outdoors with its asymmetrical hem that ups the style factor. The best part is that the loose design keeps you cool in the summer heat.
Cut out fabric pieces. For the front, loosely trace a bodice pattern that you like directly onto the fabric, then extend the side into a trapezoidal configuration to a length of your liking. For the back, trace the front piece and raise the neckline by a couple of inches. For the neck and armhole bindings, cut three strips (1-inch wide) running parallel to the width of the fabric to get the necessary stretchiness. Make sure the length of each strip is long enough for the neck and arm openings. Cut a square or rectangular piece for the pocket, roughy 5 x 5 inches. Unless otherwise indicated, zig zag stitches are your best bet.
Make pocket: - Fold left and right side toward wrong side by 3/8-inch and press. - Fold bottom up toward wrong side by 3/8-inch and press. - Fold top toward wrong side by 1/4-inch, press, then fold again 3/8-inch and press. - Edgestitch along bottom of fold*. *You can use a zig zag, stretch or straight stitch here
Attach pocket to front piece with lengthened straight stitch on three sides (stitch 1/4-inch from edge of pocket). I chose to place it in the general upper left region.
Sew shoulders together with right sides facing with 3/8-inch seam allowance.
Sew side seams with right sides together with 3/8-inch seam allowance.
Measure the circumference of the neck opening with a measuring tape and trim the neck binding to size. Sew short ends of neck binding with right sides together to form a ring/loop. Fold in half length-wise with wrong sides facing, and aligning the raw edges, attach neck binding to neck opening, right sides facing. Stitch with 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Repeat previous step with armhole bindings.
Since knit doesn't fray, you can leave the hem unfinished. It gives it a slightly edgy look combined with the asymmetrical shape! All done!
