Press the square of patterned fabric right side up on the square of bonding web. Turn the piece over and press again to fuse the layers together. Cut out the apple motif neatly. Peel off the backing paper. Position the motif on the centre of the right side of one coaster. Press the motif to the coaster
Thread a size 8 crewel needle with two strands of embroidery thread, knot the end. Blanket stitch the outer edge of the apple. To blanket stitch, bring the needle out on the edge of the motif then insert it 3 mm (1⁄8 in) to the right-hand side and 3 mm (1⁄8 in) in from the edge. Bring the needle out on the edge of the motif, 3 mm (1⁄8 in) along from where it first emerged, keeping the thread under the needle. Pull the needle and thread through the fabric and continue all around the edge of the apple. Blanket stitch along the stalk too.
Tack the insulated wadding to the wrong side of the appliqued coaster. Pin the fabric coasters together with right sides facing. Stitch the raw edges taking a 1 cm (3⁄8 in) seam allowance, leaving a 6 cm (2. in) gap in one edge to turn through. Carefully trim away the wadding in the seam allowance close to the seam and gap to reduce the bulk in the seam allowance. Clip the corners. Turn the coaster right side out and press the edges. Slipstitch the gap closed. Tip... Insulated wadding is heat resistant but not heatproof. Curtain interlining can be used instead but it offers less heat resistance.
