About

This is for http://30daysofcreativity.com/ and the theme was "Argyle" so I decided to turn a toddler t-shirt into a dress for http://www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com/howyoucanhelp.htm, which is a non-profit organization that accepts donations of homemade dresses for little girls around the world who don't have one.

As I had only seen Argyle in solid colors before I decided to try with print fabric and stitching instead and attached a skirt in coordinating fabric, putting a decorative black stitch at the hem. It was simple and fun to make.

You Will Need (9 things)

  • T Shirt
  • Fabric
  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Straight Pins
  • Ribbon
  • Heat N Bond (optional)
  • Iron (optional)

Steps (6 steps, 30 minutes)

  1. 1

I started by making a template for the diamond shape for the argyle out of an index card that is 2 3/4" wide and 4 inches tall. (The T-Shirt/dress is 6-6x girls size)

  2. 2

I cut out 3 diamond shapes then ironed on Heat N Bond then ironed the shapes on the t-shirt about an half an inch apart - if you don't have Heat N Bond you could pin the pieces to the t-shirt.

I used a zigzag stitch in a coordinating color (pink) and stitched around the edges to secure them to the t-shirt.

  3. 3

I then pinned the diamond shape between the two diamond shapes sewn on the t-shirt and then zigzagged around the edges in a contrasting color (I used black).

  4. 4

Repeat the above between the other two diamonds.

  5. 5

For the skirt, I used 10 inches of fabric(fabric is 45 inches wide)and and put a half in hem at the bottom and used decorative stitch on top in contrasting thread.

I then ran a gathering stitch at the top, sewed a seam in the back, then pinned right sides together with the seam and the center of the back of the t-shirt and pinned around the t-shirt then stitched together.

  6. 6

I used 2 yds of 1 inch wide ribbon, fold it in half and zigzag the ribbon to the right side. I then stitched down at the bottom all the way around except I where the bow is to be tied.

I tied the bow then ran a decorative stitch at the ends of the ribbon at an angle where I wanted to cut them then cut off the ends.
