I think that these are actually called Puris, but I didn't want to put them in the title incase I was wrong! My spanish relative taught me how to make these so I don't know the exact name. These are a great breakfast treat but they can also be part of a yummy dessert.

Description

Instructions

  1. Small img 0160

    Mix together flour and water until you get the consistency of bread dough. I used one cup of flour to make the bowl of them you see here.

    Sprinkle some flour on your work surface and roll out your dough VERY thin. But remember as you roll to keep picking up the sheet of dough and flipping/moving it so that it doesn't get stuck to the table. Then use your cutter to cut out individual shapes. I only had a circular one but you can use any shape you want! When you cut them out they should come out a little bit thicker round the edges, this is good because it means they hold here and puff up in the middle.

    Fill a frying pan with high sides with oil (you could also use a chip pan but I thought it would make them taste a bit chippy) and put it on to heat. Once it is hot you can CAREFULLY (oil gets very hot!) drop your pieces in.

    Use a spatula (or other utensil...) to flip the pieces and they should puff up and go golden brown. Sometimes there are lots of smaller bubbles instead of one big one, don't stress if they don't look perfect ;)

    Transfer them onto a plate with kitchen towel to absorb the excess oil

    Enjoy! I like them best with honey or sugar. NB: if they aren't working out at first, keep trying! my first ones were mental and I thought I couldn't do it at all, it could be that your dough is not thin enough or your oil not hot enough.
