Description

Simple pine sushi serving board and plates. My Girlfriend and I love sushi, so I made these as a surprise for her! No step by step pictures I'm afraid but I'll try to illustrate the construction of these simple, and useful, boards!

Instructions

  1. Small 1 1261851326

To begin, you will need to cut 4 wooden pieces from the board. The pine strip I used was 94mm wide, and I cut two 307mm long sections for the longer panels (to make the serving board) and two 147mm long sections for the plates.

  2. Small 2 1261852187

Next I cut the `feet`. 2 longer strips are made by cutting another piece 147mm long, and then cutting that into three length-ways to make 3 147x31x10mm pieces. 2 of which are used as the feet for the serving board. The third of which is used and cut into to 8 10x31x10 `feet` for the smaller plates. It is worth sanding these so they are smooth and neat - it is very hard later on!

The two large panels can then be sanded to have smooth, even ends (I did this by clamping the two panels together and planing and sanding the ends down with a sanding block). Apply wood glue to one of the edges, and squeeze them together firmly. As soon as possible clean off any excess glue from the divide (particularily on the `food side`). This will then need to rest as per the instructions on your wood glue.

Now its time for the feet...this is annoying, I apologise! The longer strips for the serving board are much easier. The smaller feet are positioned roughly 10mm from the long and short sides at each corner. Similarly the long feet are 10mm from the short edge of the now combined serving board. Dont use too much wood glue, and as before, wipe off any excess ASAP to avoid staining. These will take an hour or so to ensure they are stuck securely....they will break off...but eventually they will stick - if one fails to adhere sand down the end of the foot and the point to which it will attach, to ensure a clean surface to stick to.

Once the `feet` are well attached you can stain your boards. I chose the colour purely on the colour of the chop sticks and mats I already had, but it is of course up to your personal preference! Long clean brush strokes will ensure a clean finish to the upper surface. Do the feet and undersides too to ensure protections when cleaning! Ensure there is no bare pine exposed - bare areas will be prone to water damage. When cleaning the boards use as few strokes as possible and as little abrasion as possible - needless to say, a dishwasher is a no-no!
