Instructions

  1. Small dsc02605 copy 1278626974

Cut two pieces from your jersey knit fabric. Each piece should be 30 x 31 in.

  2. Small dsc02609 copy 1278627145

From the top down 9 in. fold in and pin both sides of the material 1/4 in. Do this to both sides of the two pieces of fabric.

  3. Small dsc02615 copy 1278627358

Sew the places you've pinned. A straight stitch will do but I used a zigzag.

  4. Small dsc02622 copy 1278627619

Fold and pin the top of the pieces down 1 1/2in. This is the place where we will be sliding the straps in.

  5. Small dsc02625 copy 1278627832

Then sew across the pinned places with two straight lines. The front of the fabric will look like this.

  6. Small dsc02628 copy 1278627976

Pin the front sides of the two pieces together below the 9 in. that are already sewn over. Sew a straight line down both pinned sides.

To make the Straps: Cut strips of material from the cotton you chose for straps. The strips should be 2 in. wide and as long as your pieces of material is. Cut enough strips so that you'll have 150 in when they are sewn end to end.

  8. Small dsc02638 copy 1278628300

Pin and sew the ends of the strips together to make one long, skinny piece of fabric.

  9. Small dsc02636 copy 1278628676

Fold in the sides of the material and pin them together. The piece should be 1 in wide now. This part can be tricky, just be patient.

  10. Small dsc02640 copy 1278628779

Sew a straight stitch along both sides of the strap.

  11. Small dsc02648 copy 1278628873

fold in and pin the bottom of the dress 1 in. to make the hem. Sew along the edge. I used a zigzag stitch to make sure the edge doesn't come up.

  12. Small dsc02649 copy 1278629080

Run a safety pin through the end of the strap piece.

  13. Small dsc02650 copy 1278629161

Push the safety pin and strap it is attached to through the space in the top of the dress, which was made in step 4. Push the strap through the first side of the dress, across the gap in the side, and through the second side. The fabric will be gathered along this strap to achieve the various styles.
