You Will Need (11 things)

  • Air Dry Clay
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Cardboard
  • Paintbrushes
  • Steel Wool
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Jar
  • Wax Paper
  • Hemp thread or ribbon

Steps (3 steps, 120 minutes)

  1. 1

Gather up your materials and make some templates. Geometric shapes work well for the ornament shape. Make a couple of small cardboard templates as well. You will be using the cardboard to impress into the clay. Cover your work area with wax paper. Take a bit of the clay, and knead it like dough. You want to get all the bubbles out and add water to smooth the clay. Next roll it out onto your work surface.

  2. 2

Place the paper template shape on top of the clay and use a butter knife to trim around the shape. Then make impressions in the clay with the cardboard templates and the end of a paintbrush. Also use the paintbrush to make a hole in the top of the ornament. Once you are done, let the ornament dry over night. Sand it with steel wool a bit when the clay is totally hardened.

  3. 3

Now comes the fun part! Paint the ornament with acrylic paints. As an optional step you could seal the ornament with acrylic gel or spray sealant to make it waterproof. Then tie a loop of hemp thread or ribbon onto the ornament. These are so fun to make and they can be as elegant or quirky as you wish!
