Inspired by Mark Montano's Big Ass Book of Crafts, I used a Cricut machine instead of cut out images as a stencil. My best friend came over and we had a blast making these!

Instructions

1. Clean your plates and dry them well.

2. Cut out the shapes you would like to use as a stencil - I used a Cricut machine, the Indie Art cartridge for all but the owl. These will serve as stencils.

3. Apply repositionable spray adhesive to your cutout stencil and place on the backside of your plate.

4. If you want more texture/color apply the adhesive to a piece of lace cut to cover the back of your plate. I found after a few attempts that spraying the lace well and letting it sit for a minute made it more tacky so that it didn't slide around and mess up the area about to be painted. Stick it to the back of the plate.

5. Choose your colors! I used Velspar spray enamel - it comes in FABULOUS colors and is relatively inexpensive.

6. The background color goes first. Spray over the lace lightly, then come back after awhile and spray it again. This way the paint won't run or soak through the lace.

7. Once the paint has set just a little while remove the lace and let dry.

8. If you want another background color to show through the lace pattern on your plate choose it and spray over the plate again. Let dry.

9. Using tweezers peel off your stencil - choose the color for the main image and spray! Let dry.

10. This step isn't necessary but I like continuity (in a weird way). I made a set of plates and wanted the backs to all be black so that they "match". So I went over the backs again with black paint and let it dry over night.

11. Last but not least seal your paint job with a good spray on sealant - not totally necessary if you're using enamel, but it doesn't hurt and protects the paint.

12. Voila! You now have a sweet set of totally unique plates!
