For my Mum's birthday last month she requested something hand made. She's a huge cat fan, so I decided to immortalise her cat Astra (long story) in amigurumi form. The one I will type out is a white bellied stripy cat, but you can miss out all the white and crochet each round in one colour to create just a stripy cat, or you can miss the colour changes entirely for a single colour kitty. Or change where you like - the basic shape is simple so feel free to experiment with yarn colour.

NB: I start my amigurumi using CH2 for simplicity, but if you prefer you can use a magic ring. Head: Worked in joined rounds. Ch2/ magic ring in white. Round 1 (6sc white): 6 Sc in second chain from hook. SL ST to join (6) Round 2 (12sc white): CH1. 2 SC in each stitch around. SL ST to join (12) Round 3 (18sc white): CH1. {2SC in one stitch, 1SC in next stitch} repeat around. SL ST to join (18) Round 4 (24sc white): CH1. {2SC in one stitch, 1SC in next two stitches} repeat around. SL ST to join (24) Round 5 (10sc white, 20sc dark brown): CH1. {2SC in one stitch, 1SC in next three stitches} repeat around. SL ST to join (30) Round 6 (10sc white, 20sc light brown): CH1. SC around. SL ST to join (30) Round 7 (2sc light brown, 6sc white, 2sc light brown, 20sc dark brown): CH1. SC around. SL ST to join (30) Round 8 (4sc dark brown, 2sc white, 4sc dark brown, 20sc light brown): CH1. SC around. SL ST to join (30) Round 9 (8sc light brown, 16sc dark brown): CH1. {DEC, 1SC in next three stitches} repeat around. Ears (x2): Ch5 in dark brown Row 1: 4sc (4) Row 2: Dec, Dec (2) Row 3: Dec (1) Finish off and attach to head.

SL ST to join (6) Finish and sew open end to head so the white panels line up.
Legs (x4): (NB: The photo at the top shows four slightly different legs to match Astra’s odd ones, but I’ll just tell you the one simplest pattern). Crochet in joined rounds. Ch2 / magic ring in white. Round 1 (6sc white): 6 Sc in second chain from hook. SL ST to join (6) Round 2 (12sc white): CH1. 2 SC in each stitch around. SL ST to join (12) Round 3 (12sc white): Ch1. SC around. SL ST to join (12) Round 4 (12sc light brown): Ch1. SC around. SL ST to join (12) Round 5 (12sc dark brown): Ch1. SC around. SL ST to join (12) Round 6 (12sc light brown): Ch1. SC around. SL ST to join (12) STUFF Round 7 (6sc dark brown): Ch1. DEC around. SL ST to join (6) Finish and sew to the body so the cats belly and chin still slightly touch the floor. I forgot to take a photo of just the legs. Oops. Here's how they look sewn on!
TAIL: Plat three strands of dark brown and three strands of light brown (or two strands of dark brown, two strands of light brown and two strands of black to get the tail as shown). stop when you have approx 5cm (or your desired length). Sew in place on the body.
FACE: Embroider a triangle nose using peach embroidery thread. Embroider a mouth using black embroidery thread (Nerdigurumi has an excellent tutorial for this http://nerdigurumi.com/embroidering-mouths-on-amigurumi.html). Embroider the eyes by sewing three horizontal stripes of green embroidery thread, then two vertical stripes of black embroidery thread over the centre.
