Just after we'd been to see Metric, the barman in my favourite pub gave me this old piece of hardware he'd salvaged from a computer hard drive and thought I'd like to turn it into something.

  2. Small 2019 04 23 185940 10747617296 img 2189

It reminded me of a bird, which gave me the idea to make a piece of taxidermy jewellery inspired by the Metric song Stadium Love.

  3. Small 2019 04 23 185945 img 2191

You can use any piece of hardware you like for this ring. Gather your hardware and a ring blank with a base large enough to hold the hardware.

  4. Small 2019 04 23 190306 img 2192

Cut a couple of lengths of jewellery wire in a matching colour.

  5. Small 2019 04 23 190338 img 2193

Thread the wire through the ring base.

  6. Small 2019 04 23 190355 img 2194

And attach to your hardware, using any holes and gaps to secure it to the ring base.

  7. Small 2019 04 23 190422 img 2195

Tie securely and trim off any excess wire.

  8. Small 2019 04 23 190441 img 2196

Check it sits nicely on your finger.

  9. Small 2019 04 23 190453 img 2198

Break off a small ball of air dry clay.

  10. Small 2019 04 23 190521 img 8020

Begin sculpting the clay around the hardware to form the skull of your taxidermy.

  11. Small 2019 04 23 190613 img 8021

Make sure to leave coolest parts of the hardware exposed.

  12. Small 2019 04 23 190632 img 8022

I found a pair of gold eyelets that fit perfectly in the eye sockets.

  13. Small 2019 04 23 190715 img 8023

Build up the clay around the eye sockets, using a little water to get the clay nice and sticky to hold the eyelets in place.

  14. Small 2019 04 23 190811 img 8024

Press the eyelets firmly in place.

  15. Small 2019 04 23 190825 img 8025

Use an awl to scrape out the excess clay from inside the eye.

  16. Small 2019 04 23 190859 img 8027

I then found some gold feather charms which matched perfectly.

  17. Small 2019 04 23 190948 img 8028

Wet the back of the skull with a little water to get it nice and sticky.

  18. Small 2019 04 23 191024 img 8029

Press a feather bead into the back of the skull.

  19. Small 2019 04 23 191052 img 8031

Continue with the rest of the feathers, making sure they look nice.

  20. Small 2019 04 23 191200 img 8054

I then placed another lump of clay at the back of the skull to secure the feathers in place. This looked a little plain until I found a gold charm that matched perfectly and pressed it into the clay to embed itself.

  21. Small 2019 04 23 191129 img 8032

The ring was looking good but it looked like it needed one more thing.

  22. Small 2019 04 23 191319 img 8040

Remembering the amazing studded bra that Emily Haines from Metric had worn on the stage, I knew a star stud would be the perfect finishing touch.

  23. Small 2019 04 23 191550 img 8041

Simply press the stud into the centre of the skull and leave the clay to set so that it embeds.

  24. Small 2019 04 23 191625 img 8049

Leave the ring to set overnight so that all the embellishments embed into the clay.

  25. Small 2019 04 23 191744 img 8050

Use the awl to chip off any excess clay from around the feathers.

  26. Small 2019 04 23 191706 img 8051

Add a final layer of clay, using water to smooth it over the surface of your ring and get it looking perfect.

  27. Small 2019 04 23 191811 img 8052

Use the awl to add a dotted pattern around the eyes.

  28. Small 2019 04 23 191830 img 8053

Add a little dotted decoration to the nose.

  29. Small 2019 04 23 191852 snapseed 4

Leave to set one last time and then it's ready to wear!
