The mindwarp of this skirt is totally worth it
Every time I think about making a spiral skirt my brain falls off. This is just too surreal. How does this work? Why do they say the skirt turns out shorter than expected? Where does the length go? How much fabric will I need? How do I make my skirt extra fluffy if I can't understand the pattern? Should I worry about the direction of threads?

But spiral skirts are so pretty and look so cool and it will be perfect for dancing barefoot on wet grass...

A glass of sparkling wine (to calm me down) and two old soft tired bedsheets (in case everything goes wrong and I'll have to throw it away) and off we go.

  • How to make a circle skirt. Spiral Skirt (First Attempt) - Step 1
    Step 1

Draw a circle on a large sheet of paper and a smaller circle to make it shaped like a spiral. I used this drawing (http://www.janelwashere.com/crafts/craftpics/spiralv2_shape.jpg) from this page http://www.janelwashere.com/crafts/spiral_skirts.html

I think it's about half a meter in diameter.

    Step 2

Cut out the pieces from a bed sheet and arrange them with all the spirals going the same direction. Sew.

    Step 3

After a few pieces have been sewed the skirt starts to take a form. You can see the skirt is quite short although individual pieces are long. Its the spiraling doing its sneeky spiraly thing.

    Step 4

At this point I had used up all of the first bedsheet so I moved on to a next. As it turns out the skirt looks better if many different colored fabrics are together. Probably next time should arrange them by turns.

    Step 5

Once you have added enough pieces for the skirt to reach around your waist just sew together the first and last piece and hem the edge.
Add any details (buttons, flowers, pockets, waistband..) you like.
Spin around the room giggling like a little girl.

Love this.. Thanks.... I just finished making one from and old white eyelet fabric shower curtain. I used lace around the bottom hem. How did you hem it?

I didn't. A lace sounds like a perfect thing, though
