About

Sausage gravy biscuits are synonymous with the south...almost anyone you meet has enjoyed the dish at least once (often on a weekly basis!). The meal originated because it was cheap and substantial, perfect for the long hours of work spent on farms in what used to be a mostly agrarian culture.

You Will Need (14 things)

  • For the biscuits:

  • 2 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 4 tsp Baking Powder
  • 2 tsp Sugar
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 Egg
  • ½ cup Butter , Frozen
  • ⅔ cup Milk
  • For the sausage gravy:

  • ⅓ cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 lbs Breakfast Sausage(s)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 3 cup Whole Milk

Steps (10 steps, 30 minutes)

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Remove the butter from the freezer, and grate it into the mixture on a box grater (this allows for a uniform consistency throughout the dough). Stir with a fork until thoroughly mixed.

  2. 2

Beat the egg with the milk, then stir into the dry ingredients just until moistened.

  3. 3

Turn onto a well-floured surface, and knead 10 - 15 times. Pat the dough out to 1 inch thickness. Do not overwork the dough.

  4. 4

Cut with a floured biscuit cutter or drinking glass, pressing straight down without twisting the cutter (this helps the biscuit rise higher). Place on a lightly greased baking sheet.

  5. 5

Bake for 8 -14 minutes or until golden brown. Keep warm.

  6. 6

Break apart the breakfast sausage into small pieces and add to a pre-warmed skillet. Brown the sausage over medium-high heat until no longer pink.

  7. 7

Reduce the heat to medium. Sprinkle on half the flour and stir so that it is all soaked up, then add more little by little. Cook it for another minute while continually stirring.

  8. 8

Pour in the milk, stirring constantly. Cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it thickens (this may take 10 - 12 minutes).

  9. 9

Add salt and pepper to taste, and continue cooking until the gravy has thickened.

  10. 10

Cut your warm biscuit in half, and spoon over the sausage gravy. Enjoy with a hot cup of coffee!
