Playing roller derby means I have a lot of socks that die an early death due to holes from falling over. BUT! Never fear! There IS a way to recycle those dead socks AND get awesome hair at the some time! And the best bit? There's next to no wastage AND you don't have to know how to sew. Instant gratification? Playing roller derby means I have a lot of socks that die an early death due to holes from falling over. BUT! Never fear! There IS a way to recycle those dead socks AND get awesome hair at the some time! And the best bit? There's next to no wastage AND you don't have to know how to sew. Instant gratification? You bet! :)

Instructions

Turn your sock inside out. This isn't completely necessary, but I'm something of a perfectionist and I didn't want to wear inside-out socks on my head. :)

  2. Small photo 14 1299300572

Fold the end down. you don't want to fold it too far down. Basically, you want to keep this as tight as possible. That way, when you place it on your head and make your bun, it will be lovely and tight, with no lumps or bumps. We all want a nice uniformed shape to our buns, and a loosely rolled bun pad will NOT allow for that.

Now, nice and gently roll that sock down your leg, (excuse the fluorescent white legs) BUT...

  4. Small photo 10 1299300836

... STOP when you get to your heel. You want to roll the sock even more gently than you have been. We want the bulk that the heel of your sock has to offer, but we want it integrated slowly so we don't get one side more noticeably bulky than the other. So easy does it.

  5. Small photo 5 1299300934

Okay, so you've got it over your heel and you've slowly rolled it down to the ball of your foot (or if you have strange feet like mine, the widest part of it). STOP! We don't want to go past this point with the sock on our foot because it'll be hard for us to handle.

So we're going to slide our hand palm-side up along the top of our foot and take the sock off that way. That way the sock will be on our hand and we'll be able to manipulate it just how we want. *sigh* If only everything were that easy to manipulate, eh? :) Keep rolling it until you have just the toe of the sock unrolled.

Take your scissors and snip off JUST the top of the toe. Remember, we want as little waste as possible.

Roll the toe of the sock over the rest of the roll and tidy up the ends. At this point, if you want, you can sew it under and tidy it all up properly. I didn't, as I wanted these for a party I'm going to the same evening that I got the brainwave... Well, that and I like instant gratification. :) when you go to put this on your head, make sure the side with the loose or sewn edge is against your head. That way, when you go to brush your hair over it, it won't show.

And there you have it. Now, there are a million and one tutorials out there on how to put these into your hair, but I will be wearing these with a hair piece, so if people want a tutorial on how to put them into your hair with an extension piece, let me know in the comments! Enjoy!
