I've been desperately wanting to make a stencil t-shirt recently and I bought contact paper for it but accidentally left it at my brother's I also read that freezer paper works well but I couldn't find a roll to buy that was reasonably sized. Start with your clean t-shirt. This is a shirt I modified from a large long-sleeve t-shirt.
Print out what you intend to stencil, it can be a solid stencil as well, but to mimic my logo I made dots.
Cut out the letters, but leave the small letters for freehanding later.
Figure out where you want your stencil placed. This is very important because once you add the glue and set it on the shirt, it should not be moved. I used sewing pins to mark the corners of the page.
Flip the stencil over to the other side and outline the letters (close to the edge) with the elmer's glue, try not to go crazy with the glue or it will seep into the area you intend to paint.
Place and press the stencil onto the shirt making sure that you smooth each letter down.
Take a cotton swab and remove the cotton from one end, what you should have is a plastic cylinder. I highly recommend using this because it concentrates the paint in the middle of each dot and dries very nicely. Obviously, if you're doing a different design, use a paintbrush, foam brush, etc. to paint he design.
Paint the design in. With my particular design, I had to try and keep the dots in straight line, which wasn't always easy. The only one I wish I could redo is the R, my lines aren't the best for that one. Oh well, I goes I need direction to perfection :D
Wait until the paint is dry and then peel the stencil off. The paper around the edges may seem like it's never going to come off, but never fear, just look at the next step.
Fill a tupperware container with warm water and soak the design in it. Literally within 2 minutes you should be able to peal the paper off, Once the paper's off, the glue will show in the fabric and you can rub that out a little. Another version of this step would be to through the shirt in the wash, but you may end up with bits of paperor paper lint in your clothes...
The water should be a little cloudy with the glue and paper coming off.
Use the cotton swab and a toothpick to fix the parts you missed and make the final touches.
With the toothpick, lightly trace out the smaller lettering...
and then do a second layer, this time filling in the letters a bit more. And that's it! You can do this project with any basic office or craft supplies.
