Description

Make a silver bell ornament for next to nothing using the top off of a plastic soda bottle, paint, glue and ribbon. The above is made out of the top of a 20 oz bottle of Coke.

Instructions

  1. Small sb 2bcut 2btop

Use scissors or Xacto knife to cut the top off a plastic soda bottle just above the label.

  2. Small sb 2bpinch 2btop 2band 2bcut

To cut the bottle with scissors, pinch the side flat and make a small cut, then insert bottom blade into the cut and continue cutting until the top is cut off.

  3. Small sb 2bover 2bcandle

Hold the cut edge of the top over the flame of the candle just above, but not touching, the flame. The plastic on the edges will curl under. Continue around the circumference of the bottle top.

  4. Small sb 2bmelted 2bbottom

This is what it should look like when you are done.

  5. Small 101 0309

Paint the top of the bottle with silver acrylic paint. I used 3-4 coats. The first coat will look sort of spotty - allow it to dry completely then paint another layer and allow to dry. Repeat until you have the desired look.

  6. Small sb 2btie 2bpop 2btops 2bto 2bribbon 2bends

Use approx 10-12 inches of ribbon and around the pop tabs at both ends and knot.

  7. Small sb 2bfold 2bribbon 2bin 2bhalf 2bthru 2btop

Fold ribbon in half and thread through the bottom of the bell.

  8. Small sb 2bpull 2bribbon 2bthru

Pull the ribbon through the top of the bell.

  9. Small sb 2bdab 2bglue 2bin 2blid

Put a dab of hot glue in the center or the underside of the lid.

  10. Small sb 2bpush 2bribbon 2binto 2bglue 2bdab

Push ribbon into the dab of glue (I used the end of the paintbrush to do so).

  11. Small sb 2btie 2bribbon 2baround 2btop

Tie ribbon (I used approx.18 inches of ribbon) around the neck of the bottle top into a bow. Use a dab of hot glue in the center of the back of the bow to keep the bow straight an secure.

  12. Small sb 2bthread 2bornament 2bhook

Thread wire ornament hook through the ribbon on the back of the bell.

  13. Small sb 2bplain

You can hang on the tree as is, or embellish with plastic acrylic jewels (on the one above I used one I got for $1 in a bag of 100 from the Dollar Tree), fabric paint, glue on small buttons or apply stickers.

  14. Small sb 2bplain

The above ornament is made out the top of a 16.9 oz bottle of A & W Root Beer. It is hard to see in the picture but it does have a bumpy texture that makes it look more like hammered metal.
