Description

skill level Sew Quick seam allowance 1⁄4" (6mm) notes • Use colorful fabric choices for the braided part of the necklace. • Instead of fabric markers, use fabric paint (page 15), or cut the shapes out of fun patterned fabrics. • For an ultra-fabulous necklace, make the various shapes different sizes or even omit the braided string and make the necklace entirely out of shapes sewn together.

Instructions

  1. Using fabric markers, draw and color 5 circles and 5 triangles onto the light-colored fabric. (You can make 2 necklaces with 10 shapes.) Circles should be at least 2" (5cm) in diameter, and triangles about 21/2" (6.5cm) high. Space the shapes about 1" (2.5cm) apart to allow room for cutting.

Place the fabric with hand-drawn shapes on top of the backing fabric with wrong sides together. Line up the edges of the fabrics. Follow the edges of the shapes and cut an extra 1/4" (6mm) around each.

  3. With the two coordinating pieces of fabric wrong sides together (the drawn shape and backing fabric), sew around the shape, 1/4" (6mm) from the edge, but leave a 1" (2.5cm) opening for filling.

Lightly fill each piece to the desired thickness.

    Sew the shape closed.

  6. To create the braided fabric string, cut three 1" x 13" (2.5cm x 33cm) strips of fabric for each necklace. Practice braiding with your child, then sew each end with a straight stitch and backstitch to secure. Set aside the braids.

With the hand-sewing needle and embroidery floss, string through the seam of each fabric shape and connect each piece together, as if you were stringing beads together. Each necklace uses 5 fabric shapes. Mix the triangle and circular shapes together, or keep them in separate necklaces as pictured. Once each piece is strung together, hand-sew one end to the braided strap, then repeat with the remaining end of the fabric shapes and the remaining braided strap.

  8. To create an entire necklace with the shapes, eliminate the braided straps and use fabric shapes around the entire length of the necklace and knot the ends of the twine or floss together. teaching moments • Identify the various types of triangles: isosceles, equilateral, acute, obtuse, scalene, and right angle. • Circumference is the distance around a circle, radius is the distance from the center of the circle to the edge, and diameter is the measurement across the circle.
